How to Choose a Race

Race selection in The Portal is one of the few choices you can partially undo with Reroll Mirrors, but only if you stock mirrors from codes or farming routes. Everything else about your character—especially class moves after Job Change—is stickier. This guide explains the three race families, their 10% rare outcomes, and how to pick a race that complements your planned class build.

The three families

The Portal groups races into flavorful families at creation. You choose a family first, then roll within it.

Milk family

  • Common: Human — balanced starter stats, friendly to every class
  • Rare (~10%): Corrupted Human — darker variant with skewed stat lines suited to aggressive builds

Humans excel when you are unsure about your long-term class. Corrupted Human appeals to players targeting Warrior build or burst Enchanter build paths if stat bonuses align with STR or INT.

Meat family

  • Common: Cat, Wolf, Fox — beast races with thematic passives
  • Rare (~10%): family-specific premium outcome (treat as enhanced beast variant in tier discussions)

Meat races suit mobile melee and pack-flavor roleplay. Wolf and Fox often appear in Race tier list discussions for physical DPS. Compare exact numbers before rerolling a Cat you already enjoy.

Mushroom family

  • Common: Elf — classic fantasy baseline with mild caster affinity
  • Rare (~10%): High Elf — elevated caster/ranged profile

Mushroom is the go-to family for Enchanter build and Cleric build planners. High Elf at 10% is worth keeping unless you reroll toward a specific achievement build.

How the 10% roll works

Each family hides a rare outcome near 10% probability. The game does not publicly expose pity counters at launch, so assume true random. Track your rolls mentally if you chase High Elf or Corrupted Human.

Mirrors from codes like RELEASE and THROUGHTHEPORTAL add extra attempts. Strategy details live in Code rewards.

Matching race to class stats

Classes anchor on primary stats:

When to reroll vs keep

Keep if you hit the 10% rare you planned for, or if your race already matches class stat goals.

Reroll if you picked the wrong family entirely (e.g., Mushroom when you main Warrior and hate caster flavor).

Never reroll on impulse after one bad quest—slow progression makes racial passives valuable over time.

Race vs Combat Points

Races modify baselines; Combat Points from gear, skills, achievements, and codex dominate late game. A mediocre race with strong CP farming beats a perfect race with wasted points. Read Combat Points after you settle race.

Cross-family considerations

The Portal lore ties families to world zones you will explore later. Roleplay matters if you care about aesthetics. Min-maxers should still open the Race-class picker before spending mirrors.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for The Portal players.

Can I change race after creation?

Yes, with Reroll Mirrors at designated NPCs or creation flow. Job Change is separate and deletes moves—do not confuse the two systems.

Is High Elf exactly 10%?

Community testing places Mushroom rare outcomes near 10%. Exact odds may change in patches—watch Updates after balance notes.

Best race for Warrior?

Meat family Wolf or Fox commonly rank well for STR melee, but verify current tier list numbers. Human remains the safe default.

Do expired codes affect race rolls?

No. Expired codes such as WELCOMEBETA simply cannot be redeemed. Active codes grant mirrors that enable rerolls.
